The ideas behind the spaces
Formerra Spaces is an architecture and interiors practice shaped by a belief in thoughtful design, honest materials and spaces that feel considered rather than excessive.
We design thoughtful spaces that speak of purpose, crafted with clarity, materiality and sensitivity. Each project begins with the site, the light and the way a person will move through it — everything else follows from there.

“A space should feel resolved before it feels decorated. If the light, the proportion and the material are right, very little else is needed.”
Formerra Spaces was founded in Mumbai in 2018 after a decade spent working on residential and cultural projects across India. The practice began with a single apartment renovation and a conviction that good design should be measured in how a space is lived in, not in how much has been added to it.
The studio works closely with a small circle of carpenters, masons and fabricators, many of whom have been with the practice since its first project. Drawings are developed alongside the people who will build them, which keeps detail honest and delivery predictable.
Design that earns its place
To create architecture and interiors that solve real problems of light, climate and use — spaces that are calm on arrival and better after years of living, built with materials chosen for how they age.
A quieter Indian modernism
To help shape an Indian design language that is contemporary without being imported: rooted in local material, local craft and local climate, and confident enough to leave things out.
Honesty of material
Concrete, lime, stone and timber are left legible. Nothing pretends to be something else.
Craft partnership
We design with our makers, not at them — detailing is developed on site as much as on screen.
Climate first
Shade, orientation and cross-ventilation come before mechanical systems in every plan.
Few projects, fully given
We take on a small number of commissions a year so the principal stays on every project.
Light
Natural light is treated as a material — shaping atmosphere, movement and the way a space is experienced throughout the day.
Material
Materials are selected for their texture, character and ability to age with the spaces they inhabit.
Proportion
Every element is considered in relation to the whole, creating environments that feel balanced and intentional.

We design quietly — for daylight, for material, and for the way a room is lived in long after we leave it.
